As we dive into winter, don’t let your skin become a dry, flaking casualty! Learn 5 simple tips to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth and extra hydrated this season.

Can you believe it? We’re already 3 weeks into winter and I am beginning to enjoy some winter rituals like curling up on the couch with a blanket and a bowl of home-cooked apple and rhubarb.

But while these colder times bring some happy delights (especially from the kitchen!), I can already see and feel my skin crying out for a change in routine! You know what I’m talking about… your face starts to look a little more wrinkled, your hands and lips are dry, tight and even cracked, and there’s white, flaking skin all over your body. Help! Well, help is here with these 5 simple tips to bring your skin to life this winter.

You know what I’m talking about… your face starts to look a little more wrinkled, your hands and lips are dry, tight and even cracked, and there’s white, flaking skin all over your body.

1. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

It’s a no-brainer… skin needs more moisture during winter. Not only is the outdoor winter weather colder and drier than other times of the year, but indoors we have heaters and air conditioners on that are also very drying on skin.

Now is the time to make sure you have a good replenishing night cream for the face to combat the drying and ageing effects your skin has endured throughout the day. Andalou’s Night Repair Cream with its powerful antioxidants such as Resveratrol is great for combating dry skin during these drier months. Another super-hydrating product to soak your skin overnight is Uni Organics Sleeping Beauty Enriching Night Cream, with its ultra-hydrating blend of Wild Rosella, Kakadu Plum and Snake Vine… a luxurious product for intense hydration.

Now is the time to make sure you have a good replenishing night cream for the face.

For daytime, you’ll need to protect your skin with a nourishing and hydrating face cream that gives extra protection against drying. We love La Mav Hyaluronan Daily Moisture Crème which contains Hyaluronic Acid and Argan Oil for excellent day-time hydration. If you’re looking for a good quality product that you can carry around with you, Uni Organics Good Day Face Hydrating Day Cream comes in a very handy 15ml Travel Size so you can easily top up your moisture levels during the day.

Sensitive skin is especially prone to becoming dry, irritated and itchy in winter. Zkin’s Relief Moisturiser is perfect to calm and replenish irritated skin with Certified Organic Evening Primrose Oil, Colloidal Oatmeal and Cotton Thistle. The Weleda Almond Sensitive Soothing Facial Cream offers a fragrance-free option while helping to reduce irritation.

Apart from your face, don’t neglect your body, which also needs a good moisturiser! Keep the body moisturised all-over with a good balm such as Sanctum’s rich and luxurious Body Balm, which smells amazing with scents of Honeysuckle, Ylang Ylang, Petitgrain and Patchouli.

2. Take a bath

There’s nothing like a beautiful warm bath to relax the soul and warm up on a cold night. Soaking in a bath is also one of the most effective methods of rehydrating the skin.

While you’re there, take the opportunity to add magnesium salts to your bath. Not only will this help soothe and replenish tired aching muscles but there are countless other benefits for the rest of the body, too. I prefer Amazing Oils Organic Magnesium Bath Flakes because they are sourced from Australian Salt Lakes and free from heavy metals.

After your bath, lightly dry off and follow up immediately with an all over moisturiser like the Sanctum Body Balm to seal in the moisture.

3. Protect your lips

You know that awful feeling when your lips are dry, feeling tight and, please no, starting to crack and chafe? Don’t let it happen this year! Get good organic lip protection like an Hurraw! or Cocokind Lip Balm to nourish and guard against drying without any yucky ingredients to swallow. Both have lots of delicious flavours to try so find your favourite.

Keeping your lips moisturised will also make lipstick stay better and look smoother and more luscious. Even better, use a lip colour that actually moistures while you wear it! I am a big fan of Zuii Certified Organic Flora Lipsticks and Sheerlips, made with Certified Organic Essential Flower Oils like Rose and Geranium so they smell absolutely gorgeous. Zuii give lasting, rich colour and truly moisturise. Another favourite are Lük Lip Nourish Lipsticks which are made from real food such as Avocado and Juniper Berry, so they are edible and incredibly hydrating and nourishing.

4. Try to get some safe sun exposure

It’s hard to rock out in a bikini on the beach when it’s only 16 degrees outside, but if you can manage it, try to get at least some skin exposed to sunlight! Most of us cover up more during winter and spend less time outdoors… because it’s cold! As a result, Vitamin D levels typically fall during the winter months due to less skin being exposed to sun. Aim to uncover more skin, rather than spending longer outdoors as this will maximise Vitamin D production without placing yourself at increased risk of skin cancer.1 Spending a little time in the sun should make you feel a wee bit warmer and happier, too!

5. Invest in a great hand cream

I love hand cream! I am lost without it whatever the time of year. However, especially in winter, hands need extra protection from the elements. For dry or chapped hands try Lavera’s SOS Help Hand Balm which is rich in Organic Macadamia and Almond Oils as well as Organic Shea Butter.

Another great cream that is a personal favourite of mine because it works well and feels smooth without being greasy is the Sanctum Hand and Nail Repair. It is very enriching with Vitamin E, Macadamia, Jojoba and Olive Oil. Madara Protecting Hand Cream is also fabulous… it contains luscious Northern Plum and Linden Flower to lock-in moisture and it also comes in a very handy 75ml size.

So there you have it, 5 simple things you can do to make sure your skin looks and feels as smooth and hydrated as ever, despite the winter chill! Now I think I’ll be off to make another batch of that rhubarb… after my bath!
